MAJULI ISLAND – The World’s Largest River Island !!

Majuli, also known as Majoli is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra River, Assam is the World’s largest River Island. It was formed due to the phenomena of the river Brhamaputra with its tributaries. It is 20kms away from Jorhat, Assam, India. It is tentatively shortlisted for the declaration of the UNESCO Heritage Site in India.
Majuli, compromises of 140 villages, considering the 1.6 lakhs of population mostly the inhabitant of the missing tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. The Deori and Sonowal Karacharis Tribes are also inhabitant here in major parts.
Majuli is the Wetland and hotspot for the bio-diversity, nurturing the rare and endangered species along the migratory birds. Not only the biodiversity is about to extinct but also the Majuli. Due to soil-erosion, the island seems to be in threat and is shrinking rapidly year by year. Surveys says that the Majuli won’t exist within 15-20 years from now.
