There are several things that have to be taken into account while planning the Ladakh tour, one being the climatic condition of the region. Since Ladakh is a winter desert, the climate here is of primary concern. The months of May to September are the best time to visit this exotic Himalayan location, as the climate is pleasantly cold during these months. However, the weather of Ladakh changes drastically within hours. So, it is advised to carry warm clothes on your tour.
Permits and passports:
Permits and passports are yet other concerns that need to be addressed while travelling to Ladakh and adjoining areas. While Indians do not require any permission to visit Leh, the foreigners need to obtain permits to visit Leh Ladakh. Ladakh is situated in a politically sensitive place. It is located near international borders and hence, specific places like Tsokar and Pangong Lakes, Nubra Valley, Dhahanu, Tsomoriri, etc. require tourist permits. These permits can be availed from the District Magistrate of Leh through travel agents.
Lack of ATM:
In Ladakh, you need to carry a surplus amount of cash, as many hotels there do not accept cards and the hotels that do so, charge an extra 2 percent service tax. ATM machines are also limited and you can find ATMs only for certain specific banks. So, carry enough cash with you and be cautious.
Limitations for Communication:
The communication lines here are hampered due to the extreme high mountainous terrain along with frequent disruptions due to extreme conditions. This condition persists there throughout the year. Moreover, there are not many STD centres that operate late in the night.
When travelling to Ladakh, a fully geared first aid box is a must. There are many reasons to carry a first aid box. Since in Ladakh, you will be indulging in various adventure sports, a first aid kit is mandatory. Moreover, those on medication should have surplus medicine supply at their disposal, as the local medical shops do not have a large stock of medicines. Besides, due to the bad weather, there are high chances of you falling sick. Hence, the surplus availability of medicines is always advised.
Outside vehicle not allowed after Leh:
Another major concern is transport, as self-drive rental cars outside Leh Ladakh are not allowed within Ladakh. Sightseeing through these vehicles is not allowed even in places like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. Besides, tourists with private vehicles, especially white number plates, are asked to prove that the vehicle belongs to the tourists sitting inside the vehicle and is not hired. Hence, it is advised that that you carry sufficient documents to prove ownership of your private vehicle. It is best to travel in local taxis or go with some travel agent for sightseeing in Ladakh.
You must be well prepared regarding landslides and roadblocks. Landslides, snow slides or shooting stones are natural occurrences in Ladakh. You might get stuck for a few days because of these natural events. The trip may sometimes also get cancelled or extended. Hence, it is advised to keep a few days as buffer days while travelling to Leh Ladakh.
